The following prerequisites and class policies apply to all Advanced Classes. Please familiarize yourself with them. Please refer to each class below for a list of required supplies.


  • Intermediate Sewing or equivalent +
  • Experience successfully completing several sewing projects. This class will not cover basic sewing machine operation such as threading a needle, switching needles, how to adjust stitch length, locking stitches, reverse stitching, pivoting corners, winding bobbins etc. Students should be capable of performing these procedures without assistance.
  • All fabric and supplies can be purchased in store or provided by yourself.  It is recommended that you launder fabric appropriately before the beginning of class.
  • Minimum registration for this class is 3 students. Maximum is 6 students.

Space in our classes is limited, therefore in order to reserve your seat, a 100% non-refundable deposit is required. You may register for a class in person, online, or over the phone (613-854-9091) with a credit card.

There are no refunds for classes.

Advanced Classes - September & October 2018

Common Bodice Alterations

In this technique class we will cover 12 common bodice and upper arm alterations. Mastering these alterations will allow you to evaluate patterns of your choice, determine which alterations are needed, and perform them with confidence. This class will cover small and full bust, wide and narrow shoulder, forward shoulder, long and short torso, full bicep, full and short arm scythe, and sway back adjustments.

Students won't complete a full finished top in this class, with most of the garment being simply basted in order facilitate fast fitting.

  • 1.75m of muslin or light to medium weight woven fabric

Jeans Making for Everyone

September 20th, 27th, October 4th, and 11th

In this Advanced Class, you can choose from the Closet Case Ginger and Morgan Jeans pattern, or the Cashmerette Ames Jeans pattern! Pick the pattern that matches your shape, size, and style. Take your sewing to the next level with precise construction and great fit in a true wardrobe staple, a pair of well-fitting jeans.

“I could make jeans?!”

Yup, you can make jeans! Anybody can make jeans! Choose from one of three patterns to make either stretch jeans (with the Ginger Jeans pattern from Closet Case Patterns and the Ames Jeans pattern from Cashmerette Patterns) or non-stretch jeans (with the Morgan Jeans pattern from Closet Case Patterns) and find out just how easy Jeans really are.

Jeans making is all about the fit. In this class, you’ll learn how to make fit adjustments to your pattern (both before and after cutting your fabric), how to cut your fabric to avoid leg twist, how to sew a fly front, how to make jeans pockets and how to add topstitching and a back pocket design to make your jeans uniquely yours! Once you’ve made one pair, you’ll want to make more!

Hampton Jean Jacket


Obviously, jeans need a Jean Jacket! As do casual dresses, trousers, and ... just about anything! 

The Hampton Jean Jacket from Aline Design is a timeless addition to your handmade wardrobe. This flattering pattern is cut to be close-fitting, yet roomy enough to wear over a couple of light layers or a thin sweater. With welt pockets, in-panel top pockets, two-piece sleeves, and all of the panels you know a jean jacket to have, this pattern is everything you want in this classic piece.

The Hampton Jean Jacket is a PDF pattern. You can purchase it here. Please bring your proof of purchase to class, we will provide you with a large format printout of the pattern. 


  • ​2.25 to 2.5 metres, depending on size. For a classic jean jacket, a non-stretch 10-11oz denim is ideal. For a less traditional look, you may also use medium weight woven fabrics such as cotton twill, linen, linen blends, or wool blends. Directional prints such as plaid or stripes may require additional yardage. 
  • Thread: regular and topstitching, 
  • Denim/jeans needle, topstitching needle.
  • 1 metre medium-weight woven fusible interfacing, 
  • 14 metal jeans buttons (Dritz brand not recommended). 
  • Optional: Wash Away Wonder Tape

October 18th, 25th, November 1st and 8th

In this Advanced Class, you can choose from the Grainline Archer shirt pattern, the Thread Theory Fairfield shirt pattern, or the Cashmerette Harrison shirt pattern! Something for everyone! Take your sewing to the next level with precise construction and great fit in a true wardrobe staple, the button down shirt.

Do you avoid wearing button down shirts and blouses because you can never find one that fits? Learn how to make your own custom shirt!

In this class, you can choose from three patterns to make either a women’s (the Archer by Grainline Studios, or the Harrison by Cashmerette) or men’s (the Fairfield by Thread Theory) classic button down shirt. All are suitable for a wide range of fabrics from drapey silk to crisp broadcloth or warm flannel.

In this class, you will learn how to make fit adjustments to your pattern, how to lay out and cut your fabric, how to make sleeve and button plackets, how to set a two-piece collar, and just how easy buttonholes really are. It sounds like a lot, but shirt making is just a series of small, precise steps that come together into a wonderful garment. Once you’ve made one, you’ll want to make more!
