Here you will find a list and description of all of our current Beginner classes.   Scroll down to see all the options and when you see the one you want to take follow the Book Now link to be taken to our Booking site to reserve your spot.

The following prerequisites and Class policies apply to all Beginner Classes.  Please familiarize yourself with them.  Please refer to each class below for a list of required supplies.

Prerequisites:

  • none
  • All fabric and supplies can be purchased in store or provided by yourself.
  • Minimum registration for this class is 3 students. Maximum is 6.

Space in our classes is limited, therefore in order to reserve your seat, a 100% non-refundable deposit is required. You may register for a class in person, online, or over the phone (613-854-9091) with a credit card.

There are no refunds for classes.

Beginner Classes - September & October 2018


Cocoon Style Wrap

In this super easy beginner project you will make a stylish and versatile cocoon style wrap. This piece is great for throwing on over a tank top, tee shirt, dress, or swim suit. It can dress an outfit up or down, and take you from daytime to evenings out.
This class will teach you how to thread and operate a sewing machine, how to use an iron, how to make tiny hems, and french seams.

Supply List:

  • For those who wear an XS - M tee shirt:
  • 1m of light weight woven fabric such as lawn, voile, chambray, swiss dot, shirting etc. We have lots to choose from in store.

Reusable Drawstring Snack Bag  - A 'Green Life' Class

Are you looking for an alternative to plastic Ziploc bags for your dry snacks? Or a way to protect your glass containers from spilling onto the rest of your lunch? We may have the reusable answer you’re looking for!
This beginner level drawstring snack bag have a round base, so it stands up easily without tipping over, and it features a drawstring top, so even little hands can easily use it! In case of spills, the bag is completely washable, and is the perfect solution to hundreds of plastic sandwich bags we throw out every year.
This class will teach you how to thread and operate a sewing machine, how to measure and cut fabric and how to sew a straight seam.

Infinity Scarf

The perfect item to finish off an outfit or keep you warm when it's chilly outside, an infinity scarf is the must have accessory. In this beginner class you will learn the basics of the sewing machine and it's functions while learning how to sew this fun and useful project. You will be able to make scarves to match any outfit, and think of the gift giving possibilities!

Supply List:

  • 2m medium to lightweight woven fabric, such as voile, lawn, quilting cotton, flannel, or chambray
  • coordinating thread as desired.

Reusable Lunch Time Cutlery Roll + Mitered Corner Napkin -  A 'Green Life' Class

Reduce your lunch time pollution by bringing your own cutlery and napkin in your lunch!

In this class, we will create a fold over cutlery roll to fit your fork, knife, spoon (or whatever!) and a handmade reusable napkin. The fold over top and tie ensure that your dirty cutlery don’t make a mess in your lunch bag, and bringing your own washable napkin is a great alternative to wasteful paper napkins.

This class is perfect for beginners, and you will leave with the pattern so you can make some for your family and friends!

Note: Please bring your cutlery to class to ensure the roll fits everything you need!

Reusable Paper Bag Style Lunch Bag 

Are you taking your lunch to work in a plastic grocery bag? Ditch the waste by creating your own reusable lunch bag!
This lunch bag is a fun take on a classic look that features a lined interior, top handle, rolled top and a d-ring closure. Make it out of cotton or canvas and throw it right in the wash; or use waxed canvas, and just wipe clean with a wet cloth!
This class will teach you how to thread and operate a sewing machine, how to measure and cut fabric, how to sew a straight seam and how to use and install d-rings.
The bag would perfectly hold the drawstring snack bag and lunch time cutlery roll for a completely sustainable lunch!

  • 0.5 metre of waxed canvas fabric
  • 1 meter of cotton webbing, twill tape, or thin leather strapping

Reusable Market Bag - A 'Green Life' Class

​Did you know that worldwide, we use and discard half a trillion plastic bags each year?

Make a difference with our market bag class by creating your own reusable tote bag to take with you to the grocery store or the farmers' market!

A perfect class for a beginner sewist, this unlined tote features straps that wrap around the tote to reinforce the bottom of the bag, and a large front pocket for extra storage! You'll also leave class with the pattern and instructions so that you can make a few more bags for yourself and your family so that you can eliminate the need for plastic bags in your household entirely!

Envelope Style Pillow Cover

 

 

Never touched a sewing machine before? This class is for YOU! Envelope style pillow covers are quick and easy, and can be adapted to fit almost any size of pillow. In just a few hours, you'll have a stylish new accessory for your home.

In this class you will learn the basics of sewing machine operation, how to measure and cut fabric, and how to sew a straight seam.

Supply List:

  • 1/2 to 1 meter of fabric (depending on size of form)
  • 1 pillow form
  • Matching thread as desired

Macrame? Yes, macrame. But not the macrame from the 70s with the weird polyester cord and the owl's eyes in wooden beads, this is macrame for today, stylish, modern, elegant and fun!

In this course, you'll learn how to plan your project, cut the cord to length, form the knots and keep them even and tight. Use a single skein of cotton cord for a simple project or multiple skeins for larger more ambitious projects.

  • single 100' skein of 3-5mm cotton rope in colour of your choice
  • wooden stick or dowel approximately 2' in length

Triangle Blanket Scarf

Wrap yourself in warm flannel this winter by making this simple blanket scarf with a fringed edge. Learn the basics of how to use a sewing machine in this Beginner class.

Join us for this fun class that will introduce you to the basics of using a sewing machine, and make a triangle shaped, blanket style scarf with a fringed edge.

You could also make this scarf out of linen for a more cross-seasonal look. Whatever fabric you choose, you'll approximately the same length as the fabric is wide in order to make an equal shaped triangle.
